What was your first cat (name, breed and colour)?

FatCat – a large longhaired ginger moggie!

How did you get into breeding?

Having owned a couple of moggies and an unregistered Siamese, I wanted to get a Lilac Point male neuter Balinese to show.  Balinese being rare commodities, I ended up plumping for a Red Point female kitten – she was in London, I am in the North East of England, so it was a day long trip to get her!  When I collected her the breeder nonchalantly said “She’s on the active so if you want to give breeding a try you can”… So I did!!

How did you decide on your breeders prefix?

I love foreign languages and secret and/or double meanings.  I wanted a name that was very short so that I had plenty of letters left for individual kitten names.  I can’t remember how I discovered it but I found that Bane means ‘long-awaited child’ in Hawaiian.  It seemed to suit the fact that I had waited a long time for every thing to come to fruition with the cats and has a double meaning as in modern English it means ‘that which causes ruin or woe’ – I think all cat breeders will sympathise with that at some point!

How do you decide on kitten names?

The foreign languages and secret meanings come in to play again.  I particularly like Spanish words and those themed on video games or films which are family passions.  I usually find that one kitten gets a nickname or at the time a litter is born I like a particular film or character and then I expand the theme to the litter.

For example, Bane Laberinto Del Fauno named in honour of my favourite director, Guillermo Del Toro, and one of his films, Pan's Labyrinth (El Laberinto Del Fauno)...suitably Spanish of course!

What attracted to you to the LaPerm’s?

It was quite a twisty route from Siamese to Balinese to Cornish Rex to LaPerms.  Basically I like cats that are lithe, colourpointed, longhaired and curly…I’ve just produced my first Blue Tabby Point longhair LaPerm, Bane Princesa Moana aka Bubbles who ticks all the boxes so is probably my dream cat!

Who was your first LaPerm?

The infamous Bane Ichabod Tiponi aka Ichs.  He was the son of my first breeding queen Doral Whimsical, the above mentioned Red Point Balinese.  We had a struggle to get him – Cally was a less than ideal mum as she fretted and attacked her own kittens so he was the only survivor of her last litter.  I was so proud of him that I made a great deal of fuss about him on email groups and a lot of people would approach me at shows to see the boy in the flesh.  He was one of the breed’s first merit qualifiers so has his own little place in history.

What is life like with a LaPerm?

Hectic!  My cats are kept in an outdoor run while we are out of the house – this primarily keeps them in a safe environment but also protects the house when we can’t see what they’re up to…one or maybe two LaPerms would be manageable but when you’re approaching double figures, well, things get a little more complicated!  They are so full of life, confidence and most of all love that there is never a quiet moment with them – well maybe for the half hour or so when they all take over the sofa (and I mean take it over - completely!) for a catnap – god help you if you’re underneath that heap!

What is your funniest LaPerm moment?
`

There are lots of course but I usually don’t appreciate the humour until some time later…  A recent example is this years Christmas tree fiasco.  Whilst trying to position the tree, I was getting increasingly frustrated and upset as it became obvious the tree I had chosen was far too big for the room…  We decided it was best not to proceed with the kittens in the room as they just thought it was all one big game.  We started chucking them out the door (gently of course) but each time we got one or two out, one would rush back in…of course!  That’s part of the game isn’t it??  The icing on the cake was that when we finally achieved the task of evicting all the kittens, we turned around and lo and behold, during the diversion their granddad Ichs had  managed to get himself inside the tree ‘sock’ and was having a whale of time!!

What advice would you give to someone wanting to start breeding and/or showing?

That’s hard – I could write a book filled with advice, I’m sure most breeders could!  If I had to choose the most important thing it would be, make friends and mix with as many other breeders as you can – I’ve noticed that the people who stay around the longest, survive the hardships and do the best are ones who are open and friendly, listening to and learning from other people as well as passing on their own help.  It’s all about sharing!
